The term 20/20 vision is commonly used to define “normal” or “average” visual acuity - the sharpness or clarity of vision. This measurement, which is determined by reading a standardized eye chart, reflects the clarity of a person's vision at a distance of 20 feet.
How Does 20/20 Vision Differ From 20/40 Vision?
If a person has 20/20 vision, it means that if they were to stand 20 feet away from an object, they’d be able to see what someone with normal vision would see from the same distance.
On the other hand, 20/40 vision refers to vision that is worse than average. If a person with 20/40 vision can see clearly while standing 20 feet away from an object, a person with normal vision can see the same object clearly while standing 40 feet away.
Even though the difference isn’t too significant, it can actually have a big impact on a person's daily life. A person with 20/40 vision will struggle with blurry vision when looking into the distance. Driving at night and participating in activities that need clear vision can also be a challenge. Children with 20/40 vision may have trouble taking notes from the classroom board or seeing what’s going on at home plate from the outfield.
While 20/40 vision is within normal limits, prescription eyeglasses and contact lenses can provide clearer, more comfortable vision.
